BRIEF HISTORY:

The first people to really call the state of Florida home were believed to be the Paleo Indians, and according to Archaeological research, this might have been going on well over ten thousand years ago, as the Paleo's are often times believed to be the first inhabitants of North America.

Much is unclear in between this time and up to the 1600s, but around this time there were several major branches of Indian tribes that lived in different areas of Florida.

in 1513, Ponce De Leon first laid eyes on the shores of Florida, creating history.

Throughout the years during the early to mid sixteen hundreds, numerous colonies were attempted, but because of famine and the harsh weather at times - were soon abandoned over and over again.

Essentially, there was strong Spanish presence here, but eventually between the English and French presence, and the fact that they were continually arming the Spaniards tribal enemies - they started to become far and few in between.

After Britain had been defeated and the treaty of Versailles was signed, Spain regained much of the land yet again. This lasted until grants were given to anyone who was interested in colonizing the vast parts of Florida still yet to be explored, which of course attracted many Americans, ultimately leading to them populating what would later become a United State.

Also, during the first two decades of the 1800s, many attacks were led against the Spanish to increasingly flush them out of other areas. This made it difficult as well for the Spaniards to claim a stake in Florida.

On March the 3rd of 1845, it was official that Florida would become the 27th state admitted to the Union. Ironically, even though many cotton plantations had been started and slavery made up a large percentage of the population of Florida at this time, the over all populous was extremely slow in its growth.

Just a matter of days before the official start of the Civil War in 1861, Florida declared itself free of the Union, making it one of the first states to help found the Confederacy.

Ultimately, between bad weather and the results of the Depression, Florida struggled both financially with growth and people well up until world war II.

Given the fact that Florida now has a population of over 18 million, and that the state is over three hundred miles wide and well over four hundred miles long, there are plenty of media outlets like radio stations. Some of the ones named are WGWD-FM, WXSR-FM, WBFS and WHFT.

Universities and colleges are numerous as well, with well known names like Florida Memorial University, University of Miami and Edward Waters College.
