Though not a state, Washington, D.C. or also originally known as the District of Columbia was established in 1790. as the constitution declares that all states are to be self serving, yet one capital separate from all other capitals and states will be the permanently established national capital.
D.C. is surrounded by the states of Maryland and Virginia, and holds the most important national museums as well as the three branches of the government. It is also the location of one hundred seventy-four foreign embassies. The population is around six hundred thousand, however many people commute to D.C. to work from other surrounding areas, and so its not at all uncommon for the population to grow to over one million during the week, and then settle more during the weekend.
The Nacotchtank were the first dwellers of this area before Europeans began showing up during the sixteen hundreds. James Madison was the first to really call for a nation's capital, explaining that it was important to have a governmental seat that could maintain itself to better serve the rest of the country. The irony is that many local laws in D.C. can easily be overthrown by the U.S. congress, meaning that citizens of Washington, D.C. have less say in local issues than people governed in a state.
President George Washington was the one who would make the decision for the exact location of D.C. on the Potomac river, which originally comprised of a 10 mile by 10 mile square.
During the war of 1812, British forces attack and burned much of Washington, D.C. in the year 1814, doing extensive damage to the Capitol building, the Treasury and the White House, in what would later go on to be called The Burning Of Washington.
Unfortunately at this time the Capitol building was still very much under construction, and this being a major set back, caused the structure to not be fully finished for many, many years until 1868, years after even Lincoln's death.
During the 1960's, and following the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in April of 1968, mass rioting began throughout the district. This continued for three long days until finally more than thirteen thousand national guardsman were brought in to keep peace. Man people do not realize, but the restoration of all of the gutted and burned out structures from this three days was not finished until the 1990s.
In the early seventies it would be made official to have an acting mayor of Washington, D.C. which was carried out by Congress known as the D.C. home rule act.
