Established into the union on January 9th, 1788, Connecticut is one of the oldest and most historical of all states, and because it was just the 5th state ever to become a part of the mass of the US, its story is definitely long and great.
Just before colonization by Europeans, Connecticut was the home to the Mohegan tribe of Indians. The first man to ever really explore the state was Adriaen Block, a Dutchman in 1614.
The way that Connecticut started becoming colonized was because of fur traders of Dutch heritage who set up a small fort not too far from what would later go on to become the capital Hartford. The original name for this area was Huis van Hoop, which in English translates to the house of hope.
John Winthrop went on to set up a colony that on its own did not do very well and would later merge with another colony. However, Winthrop was a Connecticut native and was not Dutch, which led to the fur traders and settlers becoming offended over the matter. The three small colonies would later go on to create the boundaries of the state that would become Connecticut.
Several years later a few of the English colonists trickled through, and then larger numbers began to emerge and settle at Windsor.
By 1638, the third colony known as New Haven had been established, and they even had their own constitution to dictate their way of life.
Soon the number of Englishmen in comparison to Dutch was too great, and one by one, the Dutchmen began to drift away from their establishments.
For a number of years the boundaries of Connecticut would change do to many disputes, changing its border many times again, and in fact at one point it laid claim to something called the Western Reserve, which at that time drifted all of the way into the top of Ohio.
Connecticut is also the location of many top notch educational universities such as the very well known Trinity College, Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport and finally St. Vincent's College which also as well is located in the most populated state in all of Connecticut, Bridgeport.
