Hernando De Soto was the first person hailing from Europe to ever explore what would later go onto be known as the state of Arkansas. Many people may not be aware of the fact that Arkansas played a huge part in supplying support to Texas to win independence from Mexico.
Cotton was a major part of Arkansas's industry during the 1800s, and at one point the number of slaves owned and used for cultivation of cotton during this time numbered 25% the population of the entire state of Arkansas.
Interestingly enough Arkansas would have no part in joining the movement of the confederate army until the attack in Charleston, S.C. upon Fort Sumter.
Because of the new railroad infrastructure that was rising in Arkansas, the population and cultures grew, and so did business and industry by the late eighteen hundreds.
Arkansas is also extremely famous for the historic movement of The Little Rock Nine, which caused the government to come in and provide protection for black students who were attempting to settle into a high school, providing a major game changer in favor of the civil rights movement. 1,000 troops were sent in to provide support in the year 1957. It took a good two years, but by the time nineteen fifty-nine rolled around, all high schools in the Little Rock area were entirely consolidated.
