For most of its existence the area code 205 covered all of Alabama, but as of 1995 was divided into more area codes to serve a greater population. 205 area code covers much of central and western Alabama and includes the major city of Birmingham.
The area code has been divided up twice now, the first time occurred in 1995 and also became area code 334. The second time occurred in 1998, just 3 years later and would now form the 3rd and new area code of 256.
The larger and more notable cities residing within this area code include Birmingham and Tuscalloosa. As of the writing of this 659 is the next area code which is supposed to supply relief to Alabama, but at the moment there has been nothing scheduled for when it will actually be established.
Andrew Jackson University, Auburn University and Alabama State University are a few of the more well known educational institutes that reside within area code 205.
This area also contains plenty of radio stations such as Wbfr FM 895, Wjld 1400, Classic Rock 99.5 and Hot 107.7.
Some of the notable television stations include WMTY TV 46 and TV8-WATVC.
