To say that Alaska is alluring and enchanting would be an understatement. Its history with the United States of America began when purchased from Russia in the year 1867 for a now laughable sum of a little over 7 million dollars.
It would be a number of years and go through some confusing shifts before eventually and officially becoming a part of the union in 1959. Alaska's massive size makes it the largest state, which when overlayed with a map of the main US it can be clearly seen that it is far larger than even the state of Texas.
Its also interesting to note that it has the densest population of any other state, and more public territory in Alaska is owned by the government then in any other state with a whopping 65% being under control of the federal government including many parks.
William Seward who was attacked by Lewis Pain the night of Lincoln's assassination was responsible for negotiating the purchase.
The state had been discovered in 1741 and was of interest to the Russian Empire because of the pelts that had been brought back collected from otters.
For various reasons Russia made a half hearted effort to populate the 49th state, and it was turned over to the US for around 2 cents per every acre.
The population of Alaska has grown from just over thirty thousand since the late 1800s to around seven hundred thousand as of the time of writing this.
Anchorage is sometimes confused as being the capital, because it is the largest city in Alaska having a residential population of well over one hundred thousand peeps.
Some well known films have been either completely or partially shot in Alaska, including Into the Wild and White Fang.
