Area code 602 was set up in nineteen forty-seven (1947) and for the longest time was the only area code that covered the entire land mass of Arizona, that is to say until the nineteen-nineties when it was split into two more area codes.
As is typical of the necessity of any area code split, the population boomed during the 90's in Arizona, and also the new introduction of communication technology and its broadening horizons called for more numbers, and therefore - a newer establishment of more area codes.
As a result of all of this, Phoenix ended up with two area codes, although its important to note that 602 covers the majority of that area, and Glendale sports either the 602 or 623 area code depending on what section of the city you reside in.
Altogether, area code 602 covers a total of 4 counties and thirty-three cities, some of which being Apache Junction, Sedona, Chandler and Mesa.
Some of the more well known things to see under this area code are the Mesa Amphitheater and the Arizona museum of natural history.
The total area population living under this area code is right around one point five (1.5) million people, with the majority being whites and a very good portion being Hispanic.
