This area code that is known as California telephone area code four zero eight (408) features fifty-seven cities or towns such as San Juan, Woodland Hills and Coyote and it covers sixteen counties total.
The total residency area population is almost 2 million with whites, Hispanics and Asians making up the majority of the populous.
Unlike many of the area codes in California which are relatively newer because of the rapid growth of people in the state, area code 408 is actually quite old, going back to when it was first established by NANP (North American Numbering Plan) as a split from the slightly older area code 415 in 1959.
By the time 1998 rolled around it was necessary to split area code 408 as well, much like what happened with the original 415, and this was done to serve the counties of San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey.
Up until 1959 when this area code was established, 415 was first introduced with the first batch of area codes when they were applied in 1947, and four fifteen covered a large percentage of northern California at this time.
As is understandable considering that a massive part of this area also includes the San Fransisco Bay Area and Oakland, the split was quite necessary to apply to the growing of people.
