Area code 256 was devised as a way to split from area code 205, the original calling area code for Alabama which was established in 1947, along with several other AT&T, or Bell area codes at that time.
Although it was conceived in early 1998 to expand telecommunications possibilities in Alabama, much like other area codes it was not set into effect until later on in that year so that the state's population would have time to switch things over and adapt, leaving the original 205 to be used throughout the in between months.
The 256 area code covers a large portion of land in Alabama, supplying the north and north eastern regions of the state.
Like any state, this section of Alabama certainly has its fair share of events, and perhaps none more famous than the 1908 tornado that leveled Albertville, later being labeled as the "great cyclone of 1908".
The 256 area code also contains the city of Huntsville which sports a fairly hefty population and contains the nearby Marshall Space Flight Center. Some universities worth mentioning are Calhoun Community College, Athens State University and Columbia College.
This area is also home to sports teams like the Rocket City United soccer team, the Huntsville Speedway and the Alabama Vipers, and also is home to such radio and television stations such as WYAM-LP 51, WTZT 11 Independent and WAHR 0099.1 FM.
